Northern Territory (NT)
The Northern Territory is the ultimate frontier destination. Look to this state to connect with the sweeping diversity of the great Australian outback.
From the tropical wetlands of Arnhemland in the north, to the shimmering vastness of the central desert and the monolithic Uluru (Ayers Rock) as the jewel in the crown. The Northern Territory offers an unparalleled variety of natural beauty and deep cultural experience. Local cattlemen are willing to share a yarn with a visitor and the local aboriginal people are willing to speak and teach of the sacred bond they share with the land.
Darwin
Darwin is the Australian gateway to Asia. It has a close commercial and cultural association with its northern neighbours.
The people of Darwin are of a variety of ethnic backgrounds, creating an interesting mix in the lifestyle, market and restaurant scene. Darwin is an airy modern tropical city. Rebuilt after the devastation of Cyclone Tracy in 1974, it overlooks a wide harbour, a vista enjoyed over a cold beverage at a local bar or restaurant as the sun sets on another tropical NT day.
Adventure tours, such as 4WD, bush walking, camping and fishing are available in Darwin, including scuba diving on WW II and cyclone wrecks.
Litchfield National Park is just two hours drive from Darwin. Kakadu National Park is unique with its deep gorges, pockets of ancient rainforest, aboriginal rock art, monster salt water crocodiles, rare butterflies and myriad flora species.
Go south into the desert region of Central Australia and visit Alice Springs, the laid back capital of southern desert. A typical example of an isolated outback town with its friendly and colourful inhabitants, it is a starting point for local bush tours. Alice Springs Desert Park, only 10 minutes drive from town, combines a zoo, botanic garden and research centre.
Further into the red centre, 450 kilometers from the Alice, is Uluru, sometimes referred to as the beating heart of Australia for it is situated in the very centre of the continent. Visitors are awed by the natural beauty and sanctity of this phenomenon.
