Tour Description
Sail & Snorkel The Great Barrier Reef
Port Douglas Australia - Sailaway invites you to enjoy a day to remember with a reef and island cruise to Low Isles. Sail to and explore this protected coral cay, with white sandy beaches and coconut palms, surrounded by magnificent coral gardens and the Coral Sea.
Sailaway ensures your enjoyment with small numbers (max 33 guests) and personal attention from our helpful friendly crew.
Sailaway moors in the sheltered blue lagoon, for 4 1/2 hours . . . . just relax on the island, join the guided snorkelling tour, take a trip on the glass bottom boat or laze on the deck after a superb buffet lunch. Later enjoy sailing back to Port Douglas.
The reef around Low Isles comprises of 150 species of hard corals and is dominated by 15 species of soft corals. Living amongst the corals in the blue lagoon are a large variety of reef fish including angelfish, damselfish, anemones, giant trevally, sweetlip, fusiliers and many green turtles are sighted daily.
A number of bird species reside on the island. On your tour of Low Isles you may encounter pelicans, honeyeaters, white breasted wood swallows, mangrove kingfishers, reef egrets with sea eagles and ospreys wheeling overhead.
The lighthouse was built on Low Island in 1878 and was staffed by lighthouse keepers until it became automated in 1993.
Weather data has been collected on Low Isles since 1887. Scientific associations date back to 1928 when it was the base for a year long scientific survey which studied the structure and ecology of the surrounding reef. This was the first detailed study of a coral reef anywhere in the world and many current theories of coral reef are based on the findings of this expedition.
